Caged protruberances – and other items

As we enter the final straight in terms of the house build, with only a few weeks left, it all comes down to things being finished off and details being added. Of these, there have been some interesting cages appearing on the outside of the house. For example:

If we’re honest, we’re not entirely sure what the open pipe is for – or why it needs to be caged! Maybe a water overflow of some sort? We’re assuming that the cage is for its own protection rather than ours… Or do protrubing pipes go feral if not restrained?

Another caged pipe that we think we can identify is:

Pretty sure this one is the flue from the gas boiler. In previous houses that we’ve lived in, these have always been left completely exposed and, to my knowledge, this has never been a problem. But now they need to be caged apparently. Has health and safety evolved to such a degree that exposed pipes now need to be protected?! The world’s gone mad, mad I tell you!

Other non-caged items of interest (to us at least!) are:

A power connection and fuse box in the garage. I say fuse box – because that’s what they always used to be called. But of course, nowadays there are no fuses in them – they’re for ELCBs (Earth Leakage Circuit Breakers), aka RCCBs (Residual Current Circuit Breakers), aka RCDs (Residual Current Devices). Why there is no universal name for these, I have no idea. In other words, they cut the power pronto when something goes wrong – primary for the saving of lives and property. Anyway, one of my little projects once we move in will be to wire up lighting and sockets in the garage which connect into this.

The various showers are almost finished. There was a slight pause in shower-related installations when it was realised that all the shower heads had been installed too low down – and people of slightly less than vertically challenged dispositions (such as myself) couldn’t actually stand under them properly. Tiling was removed, extensions to piping added, holes filled in, and new tiling put back.

A hot thing for towels. Not that anything needs to be hot right now with the warm summer weather we’re enjoying. But doubtless it won’t last for ever and this will become useful later in the year.

Last but not least, a lot of these have been appearing on the ceilings. A mix of smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors. The red bit is just a dust cover and will be removed when we move in.
